New Music for the Tabla of North India: Issues of Composition and Performance Practice
Nov. 3, 2005 at 9:00am
Percussive Arts Society International Convention
Greater Columbus Convention Center, Columbus, Ohio, USA
Shawn Mativetsky will speak on the subject of writing for solo tabla in the context of Western classical new music, with a focus on the issues related to performance practice, collaborating with composers, compositional approaches, and notation. With the use of both scores and live demonstrations, he will show the strength of the tabla as a contemporary percussion instrument, and to offer solutions to the challenges arising in writing new music for tabla. It is his hope that in the years to come, we will see more and more Western classical percussionists adding the tabla to their repertoire, and that more composers will be inspired to compose for this incredible, versatile musical instrument.
