Music of India
Cassette and Film Strip
By
Jill Scarfe and Frances Shepherd

This very valuable resource - you might think it costly, but film-strip and tape don't come cheap! - is the result of painstaking research coupled with specialist knowledge of Indian music. It has been thoroughly tested in schools and on teacher training courses.

There are four film-strips, totalling over 300 pictures, with an accompanying tape. A shrewd looking approach is used, whereby a recurring melody is treated from varying perspectives. In the first strip it introduces the most commonly used Indian instruments. Then, rhythmic structures (tala) are dealt with. Next, melodic structures (raga) and improvisation are explained. Lastly, the ubiquitous Indian drone is introduced. Not only is the package a carefully presented 'way-in' to Indian music, but also music is set in the wider context of culture and geography. David Peacock. 'Schools Music Association Bulletin' Music Reviews 1989.

Price: £70 plus postage.
