Prayag Sangit Samiti Examinations
Guidelines

The Prayag Sangit Samiti examinations are structured so that students may study the practical and theoretical aspects privately from their own teacher under whom in most cases they have been studying for several years. There are approved text books that cover the theory and history aspects of the syllabi.

The levels of examination are:-
Level 1 Certificate of Proficiency [of equivalent level to grade VI of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music examinations]
Level 2 Junior Diploma
Level 3 Senior Diploma part one
Level 4 Senior Diploma
Level 5 Prabhakar part one
Level 6 Prabhakar (B.Mus.)
Level 7 Praveen part one
Level 8 Praveen (M.Mus.)
Sangit Acharya (D.Mus.)

Each level consists of a written examination for which question papers are prepared in Allahabad and a practical examination with a viva voce taken by members of the Board of Examiners in India who travel to the various centres. The examiners are professional musicians and skilled teachers.

Candidates wishing to do research work for the degree of Sangitacharya have to submit a thesis and are required to appear for the viva voce examination in India.

A wide variety of classical and folk styles of music and dance are offered by Prayag Sangit Samiti. This gives a comprehensive list of subjects which includes such styles as Kathak, Bharatnatyam, and Folk Dance; Shabad, Rabindra Sangit and Nazrul Geeti; Bhav Sangit (e.g. Bhajan & Ghazal) and classical vocal; pakhawaj, tabla, and dhol; guitar, keyboard, violin and sitar.

PRACTICAL EXAMINATION :

The examinations last approximately from 5 to 30 minutes depending on the level. Candidates will first give a performance prepared from the syllabus. The examiner will test the candidate's knowledge and understanding of the current syllabus. Questions will also be asked of previous levels, which must have been covered by the candidate.

Candidates are expected to provide their own instruments and accompanist(s). An accompanist may be provided in exceptional circumstances. There will be a charge for this service. Taped musical accompaniment is allowed for folk and modern dance only.

Only the accompanying musicians are allowed in the examination room and they may only remain in the room for the portion of the examination for which they are required.

Vocal candidates are expected to accompany themselves on the tanpura. If the harmonium is used only standing notes (sur daba ke) Sa and Pa or Ma can be used. In accordance with the syllabus the student must show that he/she is able to tune the tanpura from year 3.

Sangit Praveen
The practical examinations for Sangit Praveen require the candidate to give a viva and a public performance (Manch Pradarshan). The performance which will be before an invited audience, will be arranged by the candidate for year 7 and by Sangit Examinations (UK) for year 8.

THEORY EXAMINATION :

Questions are set from the current syllabus but the paper may also include topics covered at previous levels. Levels 1 to 5 consist of a paper which lasts for three hours. There are two three hour papers for levels 6 to 8. Candidates are required to submit their answers on approved stationary supplied by Sangit Examinations (UK).
