SHANTARAM VISHNU KASHALKAR

Shantaram Vishnu Kashalkar was born in a family devoted to the cause of propagating Hindustani classical music. His father, Pandit V. A. Kashalkar, was one of the earliest disciples of Pandit Vishnu Digambar, a legendary f igure, who sent him to the Northern part of India to spread the love of music among people from all walks of life. Pandit V. A. Kashalkar was the Director of Prayag Sangit Samiti, Allahabad, for 18 years.

Music, performing and especially teaching the subject, was thus a natural gift which Shantaram Kashalkar inherited from his father who belonged to the Gwalior Gharana. Shantaram Kashalkar holds the degree of Sangit Praveen with first class honours from Prayag Sangit Samiti. He also holds a B.Sc. degree from the University of Allahabad.

Shantaram Kashalkar has been conducting regular classes and giving private tuition in vocal classical music for the past 30 years and has given numerous programmes in private and public. He has extensively toured the UK, Benelux countries, Germany, USA and Italy giving performances, lectures and conducting examinations. He has accompanied top ranking vocalists like Pandit Jasraj, Prabhakar Karekar, Vasantrao Deshpande and Manik Varma on the Harmonium.

In 1988 Shantaram Kashalkar organised a seminar on the present trends of 'Khyal' in India in which prominent scholars participated. He has conducted numerous lectures and courses on the subject of appreciation of Classical Vocal Music for a variety of institutions such as the University of Allahabad, the North Central Regional Cultural Centre of the Central Government of India, and the Rotary Club. He was a member of the Audition Committee of All India Radio (Allahabad) for Classical and Light Music from 1983 to 1987. Pandit Kashalkar has been associated with Prayag Sangit Samiti for many years teaching M.A. vocal students and conducting examinations on their behalf.

Shantaram Kashalkar was a stage actor in Hindi Theatre for 20 years but left it on account of the pressing assignments of his music career.
