I VOCAL
Performance can be in any suitable classical Ragam and Talam
and accompanied on the Mridangam.
1. Junior - 5 minutes
Kriti.
2. Senior - 8 minutes
Kriti with Raga Alapana and Kalpana Swaram.
3. Adult - 15 minutes
Chowka Kala Kriti with Raga Alapana, Niraval and Kalpana Swaram.
4. Novice - 10 minutes
Chowka Kala Kriti with Raga Alapana and Kalpana Swaram.
5. Open - 20 minutes
A full performance of a short Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi with Raga
Malika
Kalpana Swaram.
II INSTRUMENTAL
- VIOLIN, VEENA, FLUTE
Performance can be in any suitable classical Ragam and Talam
and accompanied on the Mridangam.
1. Junior - 5 minutes
Kriti.
2. Senior - 8 minutes
Kriti with Raga Alapana and Kalpana Swaram.
3. Adult - 15 minutes
Chowka Kala Kriti with Raga Alapana, Tanam and Kalpana Swaram.
4. Novice - 10 minutes
Chowka Kala Kriti with Raga Alapana and Kalpana Swaram.
5. Open - 20 minutes
A full performance of a short Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi with Raga
Malika Kalpana Swaram.
III
MRIDANGAM GHATAM
1. Junior - 5 minutes
Demonstrate basic lessons in either Takajenu or Talangu, and
Farans
(Periya Purattal) in any Talam
2. Senior - 8 minutes
A solo in either Adi Talam or Rupaka Talam.
3. Adult - 15 minutes
A solo in either Misra Chapu or Khanda Chapu Talam. Accompaniment
to a Varnam.
4. Novice - 10 minutes
A solo in any Talam.
5. Open - 20 minutes
A solo in any Talam which must include at least 3 different
Nadai. Accompaniment to Kriti (maximum 5 minutes) & Kalpana
Swaram.
IV BHARATNATYAM
Performance can be in any suitable classical Talam.
1. Junior - 5 minutes
A performance of Allaripu or Pushpanjali.
2. Senior - 8 minutes
A performance of Jatiswaram.
3. Adult - 15 minutes
A performance that includes any two of the following - Shabdam,
Padam
and Kirtinam.
4. Novice - 10 minutes
A performance of Tillana.
5. Open - 20 minutes
A performance of Varnam.
V LIGHT CLASSICAL
TAMIL ISAI
This category includes songs such as Bhajanas, Devotional
and Folk songs. No national songs will be allowed but film
music will be allowed in this category provided it is based
on a Ragam.
1. Junior - 3 minutes maximum One song only
2. Senior - 3 minutes maximum One song only
3. Adult - 5 minutes maximum Two contrasting songs
4. Novice - 5 minutes maximum Two contrasting songs
5. Open - 7 minutes maximum Two contrasting songs
PLEASE NOTE: Type of song must be stated clearly
on the application form.

Own choice.

Subjects & Syllabi
XA KHAYAL
Performances can be in any suitable classical Raag and Taal
and accompanied on the Tabla.
1. Junior (A) Without Harmonium - 5 minutes
Junior (B) With Harmonium - 5 minutes
Chhota Khayal (Sthayi & Antara). Performances to include
short and simple Alaap, Taans, and Tihais.
2. Senior - 8 minutes
Chhota Khayal (Sthayi & Antara). Performances to include
short Alaap, Swar Vistaar or Bol Vistaar, Bol Taans, Taans,
Sargam and Tihais.
3. Adult - 15 minutes
Bada Khayal plus Chhota Khayal or Tarana. Performances to
include short Alaap, Swar Vistaar or Bol Vistaar, Bol Taans,
Taans, Sargams and Tihais.
4. Novice - 10 minutes
Bada Khayal plus Chhota Khayal with simple Alaap and Taans.
5. Open - 20 minutes
Own choice. A full performance in a Rag appropriate to the
time of the performance - 12-15 minutes Bada Khayal plus Chhota
Khayal or Tarana followed by one light music item (excluding
Film music or Ghazal - tunes or arrangements).
XB DHRUPAD
The most important features of the dhrupad performance
would be the alaap & the showing of the taal by hand claps.
The alaap in this category is expected to be much longer than
the Khyal category. Performance can be in any raag that is
appropriate to the time of the performance and in taal suited
to the Dhrupad style (for instance, chautal, sultal, dhamar
& so on) and accompanied on Pakhawaj/Tabla.
1. Junior 5 minutes
Alaap using dhrupad syllables - such as nom-tom, tit-ri-na
etc.(approximately 1/3rd of the total time), bandish, taans
set to the lyrics of the bandish, and Tihai
2. Senior 8 minutes
Alaap using dhrupad syllables - such as nom-tom, tit-ri-na
etc.(approximately for 1/3rd of the total time), bandish,
svar vistar, taans set to the lyrics of the bandish, showing
of the taal by hand claps and tihai
3. Adult 15 minutes
Alaap in vilambit, madhya & drut laya using dhrupad syllables
such as nom-tom, tit-ri-na etc. (approximately for 2/3rd of
the total time), bandish, taans set to the lyrics of the bandish,
showing of the taal by hand claps, variation of the rhythm
and tihai
4. Novice 10 minutes
Alaap in vilambit & madhya laya using dhrupad syllables
such as nom-tom, tit-ri-na etc. (Approximately for 1/2 of
the total time), bandish, taans set to the lyrics of the bandish
, showing of the taal by hand claps and tihai
5. Open 20 minutes
Raag of the candidate's choice appropriate to the time of
the performance - alaap in vilambit, madhya & drut laya
with svar vistar using dhrupad syllables - such as nom-tom,
tit-ri-na etc (approximately for the first 12 minutes), bandish,
taans set to the lyrics of the bandish, showing of the taal
by hand claps, variation of the rhythm, and tihai; followed
by a bhajan.
N.B. Both the Khyal & Dhrupad-Senior, Adult, &
Novice groups may only use the harmonium for playing a drone
of the standing notes. The Open category must use a tanpura.
XI INSTRUMENTAL
Performances can be in any suitable classical Raag and Taal
and accompanied on the Tabla.

1. Junior - 5 minutes
Raza Khani Gat. Performance to include short and simple Alaap,
Taans and Tihai.
2. Senior - 8 minutes
Raza Khani Gat. Performance to include short Alaap, Jod, Taans
and Tihai.
3. Adults - 15 minutes
Alaap, Jod, Jhala, Maseet Khani Gat, Raza Khani Gat. Performance
to include Alaap, Taans and Tihais from different Matras.
4. Novice - 10 minutes
Maseet Khani Gat and Raza Khani Gat with simple Alaap and
Taans.
5. Open - 20 minutes
Own choice. A full performance in a Raag appropriate to the
time of the performance - 12-15 minutes maseet khani gat and
raza khani gat followed by one light music item (excluding
film music tunes or arrangements).
XII HARMONIUM
ENSEMBLE CLASSICAL
Performance can be in any suitable classical Raag and Taal
and accompanied on the Tabla.
1. Junior (A) Singing and Playing Harmonium- 5 minutes
Junior (B) Playing Harmonium - 5 minutes
Chhota Khayal (Sthayi and Antara). Performances to include
simple Vistaar, Taans, and Tihais.
XIII TABLA
Performances can be in any classical Taal and accompanied
with Lahara (Nagma).
1. Junior - 5 minutes
A solo including Kisme, Mohara, Kayada with Palta, Tihai and
Tukra.
2. Senior - 8 minutes
A solo including Kisme, Mohara, Tihai, Kayada and Palta, Rela
and Palta,
and Tukara.
3. Adult - 15 minutes
A solo including Kisme, Peshkar or Uthan, Mohara, Mukhra,
Kayada and
Palta, Rela and Palta, Tukara and Tihais starting from different
Matras.
4. Novice - 10 minutes
A solo including Kisme, Peshkar or Uthan, Mohara, Tihai, Kayada
and
Palta, Rela and Palta, and Tukara.
5. Open - 20 minutes
Own choice. A full performance in one taal.
XIV KATHAK
Performance can be in any suitable classical Taal and accompanied
with Lahara (Nagma), Tabla and Vocal wherever necessary.
1. Junior - 5 minutes
A solo including Salami, Thata, Tora, Tukra and Tatkar.
2. Senior - 8 minutes
A solo including Thata, Amad, Salami, Tora, Paran, Gat Nikas
and Tatkar.
3. Adult - 15 minutes
A solo including Stuti, Thata, Amad, Salami, Tora, Paran,
Gat-Bhava,
Tatkar and Abhinaya on Thumri or Bhajan.
4. Novice - 10 minutes
A solo including Thata, Amad, Salami, Tora, Tihai, Paran,
Gat Bhava, Stuti
and Tatkar.
5. Open - 20 minutes
Own choice. A full performance.
XV SUGAM SANGEET
This category includes songs such as Bhajan, Geet, Lok Geet
etc. No national songs will be allowed but film music will
be allowed in this category provided it is based on a Raag.
1. Junior - 3 minutes maximum One song only
2. Senior - 3 minutes maximum One song only
3. Adult - 5 minutes maximum Two contrasting songs
4. Novice - 5 minutes maximum Two contrasting songs
5. Open - 7 minutes maximum Two contrasting songs
PLEASE NOTE: Type of song must be stated clearly
on the application form as well as if the competitor will
be accompanying him/herself on the harmonium/keyboard, or
will be accompanied by someone else playing the harmonium/keyboard.
XVI HARMONIUM
ENSEMBLE - NON CLASSICAL
This category includes songs such as Bhajan, Geet, Lok Geet
etc. No national songs will be allowed but film music will
be allowed in this category provided it is based on a Raag.
